mirage: an image on the ground surface, not a reflection in the air, a physical reconsideration and its educational implications

Authors
Abstract    the mirage phenomenon has long been regarded as one of the most fascinating optical phenomena in physics. conventional educational texts explain mirage through light refraction and total internal reflection in air layers with a temperature gradient: on hot days, air near the ground is warmer and less dense than upper layers, causing light rays to bend and produce an illusory image of water or sky on the road surface. however, the research of dr. mohammad taghi tavassoli demonstrates that a mirage is in fact the image of a real object formed on a flat ground surface, visible only at very small grazing angles (near the horizon) due to significant coherent reflection of light from rough surfaces. in this article, while reviewing the classical description of mirage, dr. tavassoli’s innovative approach is examined in an intuitive and pedagogical manner. drawing on the principles of light interference, wave coherence, and image formation on rough surfaces, it is shown why this phenomenon cannot be explained solely by geometrical optics and total reflection. simple classroom experiments are suggested to deepen students’ and learners’ understanding of the wave nature of light and the mirage phenomenon. this new perspective not only strengthens the conceptual foundations of wave physics but also provides an opportunity for critical reflection in the teaching of optical phenomena. incorporating this indigenous scientific achievement into school curricula not only ensures conceptual accuracy but also nurtures students’ national scientific identity and fosters pride in homegrown knowledge.
