misconceptions of physics student-teachers in mathematics topics

Authors
Abstract    this study aimed to explore the lived experiences of physics student-teachers regarding their understanding of mathematical concepts and the challenges they face in explaining physical phenomena. the research was conducted using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. participants consisted of 15 physics student-teachers selected through purposive sampling. data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. the findings revealed a profound gap between the student-teachers algorithmic mastery of mathematical relationships and their conceptual understanding of the physical foundations of these relationships. the most significant identified challenges included incomplete mental models, negative learning experiences resulting from purely formula-based teaching, and the inability to establish meaningful connections between different mathematical representations. these issues led to the formation of persistent misconceptions and negative attitudes toward mathematics. in conclusion, it can be emphasized that the current teacher training system has failed to foster a deep conceptual understanding of the connection between mathematics and physics. this study proposes a fundamental revision of curricula, the promotion of active and constructivist teaching strategies, and simultaneous attention to cognitive and affective aspects of learning to break the vicious cycle of perpetuating misconceptions. investment in this area represents an essential step toward training effective physics teachers and cultivating scientific thinking in future generations.
