study of the optical properties of vanadium nanoclusters using density functional theory: designing an educational unit based on the stem approach

Authors
Abstract    this study aimed to design and implement a stem-based educational unit to teach optical concepts in nanophysics. vanadium nanoclusters were used as experimental models to help students explore the structural and optical properties of materials at the nanoscale. the instructional approach was grounded in inquiry-based learning, encouraging students to engage in hands-on exploration and data analysis. using gaussian and gaussview software, learners modeled nanocluster structures and analyzed their optical characteristics through density functional theory (dft) and time-dependent density functional theory (td-dft) methods. the results indicated that changes in the electric charge of nanoclusters significantly affect light absorption behavior, leading to noticeable wavelength shifts. this experiential process deepened students’ understanding of physical concepts such as absorption, reflection, and quantum effects. the findings demonstrate that integrating nanophysics education within stem activities not only enhances learning motivation but also strengthens analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. incorporating computational simulations and visualization technologies into science education provides a promising pathway for active and effective learning in modern classrooms.
