the impact of identifying conceptual relationships in physics on the development of teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (pck): a grounded pck-based study

Authors
Abstract    the purpose of this study was to examine the impact of identifying conceptual relationships in physics on the development of teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (pck) and to propose a model for strengthening their instructional content knowledge. the research employed a qualitative design based on grounded theory. data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews and analyzed using strauss and corbin’s coding procedures, including open, axial, and selective coding. this systematic approach enabled the extraction of key categories and the development of a conceptual model grounded in empirical data. the quantitative findings indicated that teachers who demonstrated stronger abilities in identifying conceptual relationships among fundamental physics concepts also exhibited higher levels of pck. this was evident in their lesson planning, recognition of common student misconceptions, and selection of appropriate instructional strategies. qualitative analyses further revealed that teachers with a deeper understanding of conceptual linkages were more capable of designing active learning activities, facilitating concept-based problem-solving, and promoting student engagement and deeper learning. these teachers were more effective in guiding learners toward integrated and meaningful understanding of physics concepts. the results of this study highlight the importance of training teachers to recognize and articulate conceptual relationships in physics. the findings suggest that the development of pedagogical content knowledge can be significantly enhanced by focusing on such relationships, ultimately improving instructional quality and strengthening teachers’ professional competencies. the study recommends that teacher education programs and ongoing professional development initiatives incorporate activities and courses designed to enhance teachers’ abilities to identify, connect, and communicate physics concepts through conceptually grounded and pck-informed approaches.
