Abstract
this study investigates students’ perspectives on what constitutes a “standardized test” and analyzes the key characteristics that contribute to fairness, validity, and meaningful learning. using a concurrent mixed-methods design, quantitative data were collected from 86 students through a structured questionnaire, and qualitative insights were obtained from semi-structured interviews with 6 participants. descriptive statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis. the findings reveal that students consider a standardized test as one that ensures educational fairness, includes clearly formulated questions, offers balanced difficulty levels, provides appropriate time allocation, and is administered under supportive and well-organized conditions. the most emphasized feature was that test items should closely align with what has actually been taught in class, reflecting the core meaning of fairness as “equal opportunity to demonstrate learning.” furthermore, students favored constructive feedback after the test, viewing assessment as part of the learning process rather than merely a grading tool. the study concludes that a standardized test must be grounded in psychometric principles while remaining sensitive to learners’ real experiences, emotions, and needs.
