physical study of the interaction of different metals with mercury and the amalgamation phenomenon: structure, thermodynamics, and electronic

Authors
Abstract    the phenomenon of amalgamation arises from the interaction between mercury and various metals, during which the physical and electronic characteristics of the constituent elements undergo significant modifications. from the standpoint of solid-state physics, this process represents the formation of liquid and solid alloys with complex metallic bonding mechanisms. the present study aims to provide a comprehensive physical analysis of amalgam formation, stability, and behavior. the goals of the research are to investigate the structural, thermodynamic, and electronic factors governing the interaction of mercury with metals such as silver, gold, and copper, and to determine how these interactions modify atomic bonding, phase stability, and microstructural configuration. the study employs a theoretical–analytical methodology based on crystallographic models, bonding-energy calculations, and thermodynamic stability criteria. structural data, electronic density-of-states analyses, and phase-diagram evaluations are used to examine the microscopic mechanisms responsible for the formation and decomposition of different amalgams under varying temperature, pressure, and compositional conditions. the findings indicate that charge transfer between mercury and the partner metal, alongside changes in the electronic density of states, plays a fundamental role in determining phase stability. variations in temperature and chemical composition strongly influence phase transitions, bonding energies, and the formation of intermediate compounds. furthermore, the physical properties of amalgams—including electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and magnetic response—are shown to be direct consequences of their microstructural and electronic configurations. overall, the study provides an integrated physical perspective on amalgamation, offering insights relevant to materials science, alloy design, and environmentally responsible handling of mercury-based systems.
