Abstract
the triboelectric effect, or contact electrification, is an ancient yet emerging phenomenon situated at the interface of physics and chemistry. in this process, contact or friction between two surfaces leads to charge transfer and the formation of an electric potential difference. while historically regarded as an unwanted side effect, recent studies have revealed that the phenomenon is far more complex than simple electron transfer, involving intertwined mechanisms of electronic, ionic, and material exchange. surface chemistry, molecular polarity, and functional groups play crucial roles in determining the direction and magnitude of charge transfer, while factors such as adsorbed surface water, structural defects, and mechanochemical reactions further influence the process. in recent years, the triboelectric effect has gained renewed attention with the advent of triboelectric nanogenerators, positioning it as a promising technology for sustainable energy harvesting. this review and analytical paper elucidates the physical and chemical foundations of the triboelectric effect and highlights its educational significance. triboelectricity offers a valuable interdisciplinary platform for teaching fundamental concepts in physics (charge, field, and energy) and chemistry (polarity, bonding, and surface chemistry) in an integrated manner. finally, the paper proposes simple inquiry-based activities and strategies for incorporating the phenomenon into science curricula to foster a deeper understanding of its scientific nature, environmental dependencies, and the interplay between matter and electric charge in science education.
