an investigation into the position of quantum physics concepts in the irish leaving certificate physics syllabus (a case study)

Authors
Abstract    this research was conducted with the aim of analyzing the position of fundamental concepts of quantum physics in the second secondary education physics curriculum of ireland. given the strategic role of quantum technology in today’s world and the approval of the national roadmap for this technology in iran, conducting comparative studies for reviewing iran’s current curriculum seems necessary. ireland was selected for the study due to its multi-level educational system and favorable performance in international assessments like pisa and timss. the research was carried out using a descriptive-analytical method and the technique of qualitative content analysis of official documents, including the curriculum specifications, teacher’s guide, and the irish physics curriculum specifications. the findings indicate that quantum concepts are located in the final section titled ‘modern physics,’ and also with an optional topic called ‘particle physics’ (for the higher level). this curriculum guides students from classical physics to the quantum paradigm through an appropriate sequence. the main distinction between the ordinary and higher levels is evident in the dimensions of structure and content, the depth of instruction, and mathematical treatment. at the ordinary level, the emphasis is on qualitative understanding and sts (science, technology, and society) applications of the concepts, while the higher level focuses on a more quantitative, analytical, and deeper understanding. the overall conclusion suggests that the irish curriculum is a successful model for gradually, tiered, and application-based inclusion of quantum concepts, which facilitates the tangible understanding of these abstract concepts through the intelligent integration of content with technological applications and societal issues. this study can offer an initial model for reviewing the physics curriculum in iran, and based on this, the creation of a separate section on quantum physics, the adoption of a tiered approach, and the production of sts-based content are proposed.
