Abstract
the aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a multi-faceted active learning approach (collaborative group work, hands-on projects, flipped classroom, and field trips) in remediating students’ misconceptions about electromagnetic induction. this applied research employed a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design. the statistical population comprised all 11th-grade students in feyzabad during the 2024–2025 academic year. the sample consisted of 40 male students from namavar high school, who were randomly assigned to experimental (n = 20) and control (n = 20) groups using cluster random sampling. the data collection instrument was a researcher-developed three-tier diagnostic test with content validity confirmed by physics education experts and a cronbach’s alpha reliability of 0.798. instruction on electromagnetic induction was delivered to the experimental group using active learning methods and to the control group using traditional lecture-based methods over 10 sessions of 75 minutes each. results of analysis of covariance, controlling for pre-test scores, revealed that active learning had a highly significant effect on reducing misconceptions (p < 0.001). the mean percentage of misconceptions in the experimental group decreased from 33% to 9% (a 24% reduction), whereas in the control group it decreased from 34.5% to 21% (a 13.5% reduction). the greatest remediation was observed in the misconceptions of conflating electric and magnetic fields, conditions required for induced current, and application of lenz’s law. the findings indicate that the multi-faceted active learning approach not only produces significantly deeper conceptual understanding than traditional instruction (large effect size η² = 0.412) but also effectively eliminates entrenched and resistant misconceptions that typically persist under lecture-based methods. accordingly, it is recommended that high school physics teachers systematically incorporate these strategies into their instructional programs.
