comparing the effect of experimental and simulated experiments on students’ understanding of physics concepts

Authors
Abstract    physics instruction is most effective when students can understand abstract concepts through direct experience or observable modeling. the present study aimed to compare the effects of hands-on experiments and simulated experiments on the understanding of basic physics concepts among secondary school students. this semi-experimental research employed a pretest-posttest design with two independent groups. the population consisted of tenth-grade students in district 14 of tehran, with a sample of 60 students selected through convenience sampling and divided into two groups of 30. the first group received the content through real laboratory experiments, while the second group engaged with interactive computer simulations. data were collected using a standardized mechanics concept test and a misconceptions questionnaire. results indicated that both methods had a significant positive effect on conceptual understanding. however, the experimental group performed better in understanding causal relationships and observing phenomena directly, whereas the simulation group was more successful in correcting misconceptions and developing accurate mental models of physical quantities. the findings suggest that combining both methods can lead to an effective approach for physics instruction.
