investigation of silica nanostructures in poaceae grasses as a natural source of nanoparticles: designing a stem-based educational unit for teaching nanophysics concepts in nature through an stse approach

Authors
Abstract    this study investigates the role of silica in the structural composition of plants in the poaceae family. these plants absorb soluble silica from the soil during growth and deposit it in their tissues as fine particles known as phytoliths. ranging from nanometer to micrometer in size, these particles can be regarded as natural nanoparticles. alongside a literature-based approach, this research introduces a natural example of such nanoparticles through density functional theory (dft) based simulations, presented within an instructional unit. the unit employs a stem strategy: scientific concepts such as materials physics are explored; their applications in nanotechnology are highlighted; nanostructure engineering is addressed through computer simulations; and spectroscopic diagrams are used to describe the nanoparticles mathematically. given that the poaceae family—grasses and cereals—covers nearly one fifth of the earth s surface, it represents a vital component of human life after water. presenting nanostructures in this plant family not only enhances comprehension of nanophysics concepts but also bridges physics with natural phenomena. the economic significance of poaceae, combined with environmental considerations, further supports the integration of an stse approach in designing this educational unit.
