Abstract
quantum chemistry, as a core pillar of modern theoretical chemistry, provides tools for analyzing the electronic behavior of molecular systems. however, the complexity of its fundamental concepts and the limited linkage to quantum physics make learning challenging. this study aims to present a conceptual and numerical framework for more effective teaching of quantum chemistry, grounded in quantum physics and with emphasis on density functional theory (dft). the research is applied and developmental. theoretical components included wave function, uncertainty principle, electron density, and the kohn–sham equation as central teaching themes. computationally, dft calculations were performed on water (h₂o) and methane (ch₄) using gaussian with the b3lyp/6-31g functional. output data such as geometric structure, ground-state energy, homo–lumo gap, and reactivity descriptors were extracted and analyzed. results showed that dft, beyond its computational role, can serve as an educational framework for intuitive understanding of quantum concepts including orbital structure, density distribution, and molecular energy. comparison of h₂o and ch₄ revealed meaningful differences in reactivity and structure. dft, as both a computational and conceptual tool, proves effective for teaching key quantum concepts at the graduate level, enhancing students’ conceptual and analytical grasp of the connection between quantum physics and quantum chemistry. the proposed framework is recommended for course and project design. limitations include the restriction to simple molecular systems and lack of evaluation of alternative functionals under varied conditions.
