conceptual challenges in force and acceleration: implications for instruction

Authors
Abstract    this study examines preservice physics teachers’ conceptual reasoning about force and acceleration within a hierarchical framework. drawing on graham and berry’s hierarchical model and descriptive evidence from timss/iii, a formative vector-based item involving a bouncing ball (air resistance neglected) elicited drawings and brief explanations at three trajectory points. responses from twenty preservice teachers were classified into three levels: aristotelian (a motion-aligned driving force and acceleration conflated with velocity; 30%), transitional (gravity identified but acceleration often aligned with velocity; 55%), and newtonian (net force equals gravity and acceleration treated as the response to net force; 15%). findings align with the hierarchical progression and with timss/iii reports of persistent conceptual difficulties. instructional implications include sequenced teaching to support level transitions, emphasis on net-force analysis, and multi-modal diagnostic assessment to monitor conceptual change.
