Abstract
this study investigates the major conceptual errors students commonly exhibit when learning the concepts of uniform and accelerated motion. going beyond computational difficulties, the research identifies the cognitive roots of these misconceptions, which are often shaped by unstable mental models, overgeneralization of everyday experiences, and formula-centered instruction in traditional classrooms. qualitative and quantitative analyses highlight three dominant categories of misconceptions: incorrect understanding of the fundamental concepts of velocity and acceleration, difficulties in interpreting kinematic graphs, and the strong influence of everyday intuition on students’ conceptual frameworks. by proposing a set of integrative strategies—including eliciting students’ initial mental models, creating controlled cognitive conflict, designing experience-based activities, and guiding students toward constructing coherent scientific models—the study demonstrates that combining direct instruction with hands-on experiments and interactive simulations can effectively foster deep and lasting conceptual understanding of kinematics.
