Abstract
the aim of this study was to conduct an in-depth analysis of twelfth grade students misconceptions in understanding kinematic concepts through the interpretation of space-time, velocity-time, and acceleration-time diagrams using a four-trier diagnostic test. this test simultaneously measures the accuracy of the content response (layer 1), the level of confidence (layers 2 and 4), and the accuracy of scientific reasoning (layer 3), and categorizes the responses into four levels of conceptual understanding: a (scientific understanding), b (false positive), c (genuine misconception), and d (lack of knowledge). the research population included twelfth grade students in varamin county, tehran province, in the academic year 1404–1405, and the sample included 17 students (girls) who were selected purposively. the research tool was a four-trier test consisting of 26 questions with four layers (answer, confidence in the answer, reasoning, confidence in the reasoning). the results of the analysis of 26 questions in a sample of 17 showed that in more than 53% of the questions (14 questions), the dominant level was c (genuine misconception with high confidence). the most persistent misconceptions were observed in the interpretation of the slopes of graphs (instantaneous derivatives); in particular, in extracting instantaneous velocity from the slope of the x-t graph (question 5: 100% level c or d, without any scientific understanding) and acceleration from the slope of the v-t graph (questions 6 and 7). metacognitive analysis also revealed significant differences: the average confidence in the content response (cf = 2.61) was higher than the confidence in the reasoning layer (cf = 2.40), but the confidence discrimination coefficient in the reasoning layer (cqd = 1.10, excellent) was significantly stronger than in the response layer (cdq = 0.29, very poor). the findings suggest that students misconceptions are mostly genuine, established, and accompanied by false confidence. however, their high metacognitive ability to judge the accuracy of scientific arguments is a promising point for designing conceptual change interventions based on creating cognitive dissonance between the response and the argument.
