teaching damping in physics through stem and interactive simulation: a practical guide to the mass–spring–damper system

Authors
Abstract    this study was conducted with the aim of designing and evaluating a research-based instructional approach grounded in the stem framework for teaching the concept of damping in university-level physics. unlike conventional approaches that merely employ simulation as a visual illustration tool, this study utilized interactive physics software to model a mass–spring–damper system and systematically analyze its behavior under three physical conditions: underdamped, critically damped, and overdamped. the stem components were redefined to go beyond theoretical and mathematical foundations (such as the calculation of the critical damping coefficient and damping ratio) and to explicitly incorporate authentic engineering applications of dampers—such as seismic vibration absorbers in buildings and suspension systems in vehicles—as well as the intentional design of physically meaningful parameters. the research adopted a qualitative case study methodology, in which the learning process and outcomes were examined through structured documentation and analysis of displacement–time, velocity–time, acceleration–time, and kinetic energy–time graphs. findings indicate that this approach not only enhances conceptual understanding of the damping phenomenon but also develops analytical thinking, modeling skills, and the ability to transfer knowledge to real-world contexts. by providing a clear, step-by-step, and well-documented instructional guide, this paper offers a replicable model for teaching other dynamic and oscillatory concepts within a rigorous stem framework.
