investigating and studying common misconceptions among high school students about free fall and solutions based on galileo's experiment

Authors
Abstract    the concept of free fall is one of the most challenging topics in physics education because students’ everyday experiences often conflict with the scientific model accepted in physics. many students intuitively believe that “heavier objects fall faster,” and they rely on this belief as a stable mental model shaped by daily observations. the purpose of this study was to examine this misconception and analyze how students’ mental models change following an instructional intervention based on galileo-inspired experiments and cognitive conflict. the research employed a qualitative, interpretive approach using a longitudinal multiple-case design. data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, guided discussions, conceptual mapping, and analysis of students’ explanations. findings revealed that students’ initial mental models regarding free fall were highly resistant to change, and that mere observation of the experiment was insufficient for conceptual development. meaningful conceptual change occurred when discrepant events were accompanied by teacher-guided dialogue, analytical questioning, and active reconstruction of students’ mental models. by the end of the study, students were able to correctly distinguish the role of air resistance and recognize the irrelevance of mass in free fall, applying the scientific model to new contexts. these results highlight the importance of dialogic teaching, cognitive conflict, and attention to students’ preconceptions in effective physics instruction.
