a study of conceptual misconceptions in dynamics among ninth-grade students

Authors
Abstract    the present study aims to identify and analyze ninth-grade students’ conceptual misconceptions concerning newton’s laws of motion. specifically, it seeks to uncover deficiencies in students’ understanding of fundamental physics concepts, including force, energy, acceleration, and velocity. employing a descriptive–exploratory research design, the study utilized three conceptual questions, each addressing a distinct aspect of newton’s laws, to collect data. students’ responses were analyzed, and the underlying causes of their conceptual errors were examined. the sample comprised 50 ninth-grade students from a secondary school in isfahan, purposefully selected to participate in the conceptual test. the findings revealed that a considerable number of students experienced confusion in differentiating between concepts such as force and energy, as well as acceleration, speed, and velocity. moreover, their approaches to problem-solving were largely based on intuitive or personal interpretations of physical phenomena rather than a sound understanding of newtonian mechanics. in light of these results, the study recommends a reconsideration of physics teaching methodologies, emphasizing conceptual comprehension over mathematical computation, and encourages more precise instruction in defining physical quantities to prevent conceptual overlap and cognitive ambiguity among students.
