a philosophical analysis of order and lawfulness in physics from the perspective of the holy qur’an

Authors
Abstract    the concepts of order and lawfulness form the philosophical foundations of both modern physics and the qur anic worldview. in physics, order is expressed through mathematical symmetries, causal regularities, and probabilistic patterns that reveal the structural coherence of nature. in the qur an, order appears as divine governance (tadbir), measured determination (taqdir), and wisdom (hikmah), all of which signify god s unity and purposeful creation. this paper, using a philosophical–analytical method, explores the relationship between the scientific notion of natural law and the qur anic concept of divine order, drawing on the interpretations of allameh tabatabaei, mulla sadra, and ayatollah javadi amoli. it argues that what modern physics calls “natural law” corresponds, in islamic philosophy, to the divine patterns (sunan allah) that govern the cosmos. while physics describes order at the structural and causal levels, islamic philosophy situates it within an ontological hierarchy grounded in divine wisdom and teleology. the study proposes a three-level model of order—phenomenal, causal, and teleological—showing that empirical regularity and metaphysical purpose are complementary aspects of one unified reality. the paper concludes with educational implications for physics teaching, suggesting that integrating scientific rationality with qur anic metaphysics can promote intellectual humility, ethical research, and a holistic understanding of the universe.
