this article examines the role of blockchain and smart contracts in the maritime transportation industry. it first outlines the challenges associated with traditional systems of bills of lading and marine insurance, followed by an analysis of the technical and legal advantages and limitations of blockchain technology. the study then explores the impact of smart contracts on sustainable development, the reduction of legal disputes, and the facilitation of international trade, while also presenting a forward-looking perspective on smart ports and digital logistics. finally, recommendations are offered for policymakers, shipping companies, and researchers. the findings indicate that blockchain and smart contracts can pave the way for greater transparency, efficiency, and sustainable development in the maritime transport sector.
