the impact of environmental, social, and governance (esg) disclosure and financial consequences in maritime companies, a systematic review of the cost of capital and credit risk

Authors
Abstract    this systematic literature review examines the relationship between environmental, social, and governance (esg) disclosure, cost of capital, and credit risk within maritime industry firms. grounded in legitimacy and stakeholder theories , and mechanisms such as the reduction of information asymmetry and operational risk, the paper synthesizes existing empirical research. findings indicate that while the general literature predominantly supports an inverse relationship between esg disclosure and both the cost of capital and credit risk, results within the specific context of the maritime industry—characterized by stringent international regulations (e.g., imo 2020) , high operational risks, and capital-intensive structures—are more nuanced and sometimes contradictory . employing a qualitative content analysis and critical synthesis methodology, this review identifies key research gaps and proposes a context-specific conceptual framework . it offers significant implications for corporate managers to enhance disclosure strategies, for regulators to develop industry-tailored standards, and for researchers to focus future inquiries on this critical sector.
