Abstract
hajj is one of the most significant religious rituals of islam and represents the largest annual spiritual gathering of muslims worldwide, in which a large number of iranian pilgrims participate each year. however, the current air-based transportation model faces several challenges, including high costs, heavy dependence on foreign currency, limited flight capacity, and extended travel duration. these issues increase the financial burden on both pilgrims and the government and reduce the flexibility of hajj planning.this paper, using a descriptive–analytical approach, explores the design and feasibility of sea–land hajj corridors as a complementary model to existing air transportation. the proposed approach utilizes the geographical, technological, and port capacities of southern iran to create an integrated maritime–land route for part of the pilgrims participating in hajj and umrah. potential routes—such as chabahar–muscat, kish–doha, and bushehr–dammam—have been identified as pilot corridors.findings indicate that adopting this model could reduce the total cost and duration of the hajj journey by approximately 60–70./., mainly through the reduction of air travel and optimized logistics. in addition, the project would stimulate the economy of coastal regions, revitalize passenger ports, promote maritime culture, develop local employment, and attract regional transit revenues. beyond its economic and logistical benefits, this corridor model fosters sustainable security and regional stability by enhancing people‑to‑people connections and reducing anti‑iran sentiment through public diplomacy.the study concludes that, with coordinated legal, infrastructural, and governance measures, implementing the sea–land hajj corridor initiative could serve as a strategic, people‑centered, and development‑oriented model for the future of iran’s maritime‑based hajj operations.
