explication of iran’s criminal policy toward maritime smuggling

Authors
Abstract    maritime smuggling, although it has a shorter history and less longevity compared to land smuggling, has become a serious challenge to security and the economy due to its more extensive negative impacts. factors such as the vastness of maritime borders, the presence of waterways and gulfs, poverty and unemployment in border regions, and uneven development play a significant role in the emergence of this phenomenon. smugglers transport large volumes of goods, people, fuel, and narcotics by sea, and due to the lack of effective and precise monitoring, maritime borders pose lower risks for such illegal activities. iranian criminal laws prescribe punishments such as imprisonment, flogging, and fines for maritime smugglers. however, these penalties appear insignificant in comparison with the enormous profits gained by smugglers and therefore lack sufficient deterrent effect.this study adopts a descriptive–analytical approach and, based on the collection of library resources, examines the economic, political, social, and security impacts of maritime smuggling, emphasizing the necessity of formulating and implementing coherent and effective criminal policies to combat this problem.
