چکیده
|
Self-cleaning functional membranes are promising major solution towards fouling, one of the most challenging aspects of wastewater treatment. their emergence represents a new and significant innovation in this area, as these membranes incorporate catalytic, photochemical, photothermal, and stimuli-responsive materials into a polymer or hybrid membrane structure that degrade, detach, or repel foulants during operations. this review explains the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the self-cleaning effect, for example, photocatalytic oxidation, superhydrophilicity induced anti-adhesion, light-driven thermal activation, and reversible structure changes in smart polymers. the review discusses key types of materials such as metal oxides, carbon-based nanomaterials, mofs, hydrophilic co-polymers, and surface-engineered nanoparticles and emphasizes how their properties can contribute to the prevention of fouling. furthermore, the review explores recent developments in multifunctional nanocomposites, directionally selective contaminant removal, and adaptive membrane designs to illustrate a trend for better and more sustainable treatment systems. altogether, self-cleaning membranes represent a significant advance toward high performance, low-maintenance filtration for the treatment of complex wastewaters.
