چکیده

In this paper, we review the feasibility of using mamaghan s raw diatomite as a supplementary cementitious material (scm) and its effects on the mechanical properties of cement-based materials. the use of scms has proven to be a crucial aspect of sustainable construction. partially substituting cement with silica-rich natural materials can enhance the strength of cement-based materials while also contributing to environmental preservation efforts by reducing the carbon footprint associated with cement production. additionally, this approach can lower cement consumption costs. the locally available diatomite deposits in east azerbaijan, particularly the mamaghan diatomite mine, present a viable source of scm for the construction industry in north-western iran. literature indicates that the use of diatomite may reduce the workability of cementitious materials due to its high water absorption capacity, which stems from its significant specific surface area. however, it can also improve mechanical strength over time due to pozzolanic reactions, which serve as the primary mechanism for strength development when diatomite is used in cementitious materials. the environmental impacts of adding diatomite from the mamaghan deposit have also been quantified in measurable forms, such as global warming potential and cumulative energy demand.
