Rapid urbanization, industrialization, and population growth have dramatically increased municipal solidwaste (msw) generation worldwide, posing severe environmental and economic challenges. traditional wastemanagement methods such as landfilling and incineration contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, landscarcity, and pollution, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable alternatives. msw valorization meansconverting waste into valuable products and offers an environmentally and economically viable strategy tosupport circular economy principles. this review investigates contemporary approaches for transformingmsw into valuable fuels, chemicals, and energy through biochemical, chemical, and thermal conversionprocesses, as well as hybrid methods integrating these technologies. biological routes, including anaerobicdigestion and fermentation, produce biofuels and biochemicals, while thermochemical methods such aspyrolysis and gasification yield syngas, bio-oil, and char. the study also explores environmental and economicsustainability through life cycle assessment (lca), highlighting modeling and simulation as essential tools forevaluating process efficiency and feasibility. additionally, global policy frameworks, challenges in developingnations, and regulatory barriers to circular economy implementation are discussed. the paper emphasizes theimportance of integrating pretreatment techniques, advanced emission control systems, and optimization ofcombined conversion processes to enhance yield and minimize environmental impacts. ultimately, valorizingmsw into high-value chemicals and energy products not only mitigates waste accumulation but alsocontributes to resource recovery, sustainable development, and climate change mitigation by transformingwaste streams into renewable rsources.
