investigating the role of human feeding in the disruption of urban animal ecosystems: comparing europe and north america with the middle east

Authors
Abstract    human feeding of urban wildlife, a common practice with benevolent intentions, plays a key role in disrupting the ecological balance of urban ecosystems. in european and north american countries, this practice leads to increased population densities of opportunistic species such as raccoons and deer, disrupting the food chain and increasing the risk of disease transmission and human-wildlife conflict. studies show that artificial feeding alters animal behavior, reduces fear of humans, and creates dependence on human resources, which affects biodiversity in suburban areas. existing regulations in these areas, such as local bans in european urban parks and federal laws in north america, focus on public education and habitat management to reduce these disruptions. in contrast, in middle eastern countries such as iran, the lack of specific national laws and public ignorance, coupled with emotional advertisements on social media that promote feeding as an act of kindness, exacerbate the problem. these advertisements often exploit cultural and religious sensibilities and encourage feeding birds or stray animals without addressing the ecological consequences, leading to increased populations of invasive species and disruption of urban ecosystems. the comparison suggests that western regulatory approaches, with a focus on coexistence, could serve as a model for the middle east, where legal and educational gaps require urgent intervention. the report provides practical implications and policy recommendations based on a synthesis of academic literature.
