sustainable management of stray dogs using a one health approach

Authors
Abstract    the population control of stray dogs is recognized as a major challenge in public health, environmental protection, and wildlife conservation. this study aims to provide an effectiveframework for the sustainable management of stray dog populations in urban areas by evaluatingand analyzing strategies based on the one health approach. through a systematic review ofinternational scientific literature and reports from specialized organizations, the effectiveness ofvarious population control methods—including mass vaccination, sterilization, and communityparticipation—was assessed. the findings indicate that vaccinating more than 70% of dogs, asrecommended by the world health organization, is the most crucial factor in reducing rabiestransmission and has led to the elimination or significant reduction of human cases in countriessuch as bangladesh and ghana. evidence also shows that physical removal or large-scale cullinglacks sustainable effectiveness and often results in population rebound, whereas integratedprograms combining vaccination and sterilization, along with animal registration and tracking, have achieved the greatest success. economic analysis further demonstrates that the cost of dogvaccination is significantly lower than the treatment of human rabies. based on the results, implementing multi-sectoral programs involving the veterinary council, municipalities, theministry of health, and non-governmental organizations—alongside enhanced publicawareness—represents the most effective strategy to achieve sustainable stray dog managementwithin the framework of a green city
