Abstract
the removal of heavy metals from wastewater is a global necessity due to their associated health andenvironmental hazards. this review article compares and investigates the efficiency of natural and low-costadsorbents such as biochar (produced from agricultural waste), chitosan, and their composites in adsorbingthese pollutants. results indicate that, thanks to their porous structure, high specific surface area, and activefunctional groups, these adsorbents exhibit significant performance in removing metals such as lead, cadmium, and chromium. various operational parameters affect the adsorption efficiency, among which ph wasidentified as the most influential factor, as it directly affects the surface charge of the adsorbent and thechemical species of the metals. analysis of adsorption isotherms revealed that the adsorption process in mostcases follows the langmuir model (monolayer and homogeneous adsorption), while the adsorption kineticsare predominantly better fitted by the pseudo-second-order model, suggesting the dominance of achemisorption mechanism. to overcome challenges such as competition in multi-pollutant systems andseparation difficulties, modified and composite adsorbents (e.g., biochar-chitosan, magnetic composites, andnanoparticle-modified biochar) were introduced as superior solutions. these not only enhance adsorptionefficiency but also improve recoverability and reusability. these advanced adsorbents make achievingsustainable and cost-effective treatment of industrial wastewater feasible.
