Abstract
population growth and urban development have led to the generation of vast amounts of waste, whoseimproper management poses a serious threat to the environment, particularly water resources. this researchaims to systematically investigate the various impacts of municipal solid waste (msw) on the quality ofboth surface and groundwater resources and to propose relevant management strategies. by reviewingprevious studies and scientific literature, this study examines the primary mechanisms of water pollutionoriginating from waste, including landfill leachate and surface runoff. the results indicate that leachatefrom unsanitary waste disposal sites contains high concentrations of bod, cod, heavy metals (such aslead, cadmium, and mercury), ammonia, and persistent organic compounds, which infiltrate groundwateraquifers and severely degrade their quality. furthermore, the discharge of waste into rivers and lakes leadsto reduced dissolved oxygen, eutrophication, and the accumulation of pollutants within the food chain.according to the findings, implementing integrated waste management strategies including sourcereduction, recycling, composting, and finally, sanitary disposal using engineered methods such as securelandfills equipped with leachate collection and treatment systems is essential for protecting water resources.
