Abstract
the rapid growth of urban populations, coupled with consumerism, has led to a significant increase in thegeneration of organic municipal waste, creating significant environmental and management challenges. inthis context, the use of decomposer insects has emerged as an innovative, low-cost, and environmentallyfriendly approach for sustainable management of organic waste. this review article examines recentscientific studies on the application of insect-based bioconversion systems for the decomposition of urbanwaste, nutrient recycling, and advancements toward a circular bioeconomy, based on publications fromreputable scientific databases. various studies indicate that the biodegradation of organic waste by insects notonly significantly reduces waste volume in a short time but simultaneously produces valuable products suchas protein-rich larvae for animal and poultry feed, industrial oils, and organic fertilizers. moreover, employing this approach within the framework of green cities and the circular bioeconomy plays a crucialrole in material recycling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by minimizing the adverse environmentalimpacts of landfilling and incineration. the findings of this review suggest that integrating insectbioconversion systems into urban waste management frameworks can be an effective step toward achievinggreen city goals, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable urban development.
