Abstract
this study investigated the efficiency of the ozonation process in reducing the chemical oxygen demand (cod) of synthetic wastewater containing various organic compounds, including methanol, ethanol, phenol, and acetic acid. each compound was individually dissolved in drinking water and evaluated as a source of organic load with varying biodegradability, among which methanol was selected as the representative compound for detailed experiments. the aim of the study was to optimize operational conditions, including ph, contact time, and ozone dose for each sample, to achieve maximum cod removal and enable wastewater reuse in low-sensitivity industrial applications. experiments were conducted at three ph levels (acidic, neutral, and alkaline), three contact times (1.5, 3, and 4.5 h), and two volumes (350 and 590 ml) under a fixed ozone mass flow of 5 g/h. cod measurements were performed using a closed reflux spectrophotometric method, and the data were modeled using response surface methodology (rsm) in design expert software. under optimal conditions (ph = 11, contact time = 4.5 h, and ozone dose = 64.28 g/l), cod was reduced from 690 to 93 mg/l, corresponding to 86.52% removal. the rsm model, with r² = 0.99, confirmed the high accuracy of predictions. the results demonstrated that ozonation, as a green advanced oxidation process (green-aop), is a highly efficient technology with no secondary sludge production, making it a suitable option for wastewater treatment and reuse in industries with low sensitivity to process water.
