recycling of agricultural waste for green synthesis of graphene oxide–zinc oxide nanocomposite in urban anti-corrosion coatings

Authors
Abstract    in this study, aiming to enhance environmental sustainability and contribute to the realization of green cities and universities, agricultural wastes such as banana peels and green tea residues were utilized as natural reducing agents and renewable bio-resources for the green synthesis of a reduced graphene oxide–zinc oxide (rgo–zno) nanocomposite. the synthesis process was carried out under mild conditions without the use of hazardous chemicals, and the obtained nanocomposite was uniformly dispersed within a polyurethane matrix to develop an eco-friendly and durable coating for protecting urban metallic structures. the results of physical and electrochemical evaluations revealed that employing agricultural waste as a reducing agent not only minimized organic residues and added value to agricultural by-products but also enhanced coating adhesion, reduced chloride ion permeability, and improved corrosion resistance by more than 70% compared to the reference sample. this approach, combining nanotechnology with the recycling of bio-based materials, represents an effective step toward reducing environmental impacts, extending the service life of urban infrastructures, and advancing green technologies. it can serve as a practical model for developing smart and sustainable coatings for future cities.
