a numerical investigation of isotherm-controlled contaminant removal in sand filter columns

Authors
Abstract    in this study, the numerical performance of a homogeneous sand filter column was investigated for the removal of dissolved contaminants, focusing on the adsorption mechanism and the influence of different adsorption isotherms. the column consisted of a uniform soil medium and was evaluated under well-defined initial and boundary conditions. the governing advection–dispersion–adsorption equation was solved using the finite volume method with spatial discretization and an implicit time integration scheme to ensure numerical accuracy and stability. to describe the adsorption process, common isotherm models including langmuir, freundlich, temkin, bet, redlich–peterson, and sips were applied. the parameters of each isotherm were determined through nonlinear curve fitting to the numerical data. the model outputs were analyzed in terms of breakthrough curves at two locations within the column (midpoint and outlet) and performance indicators such as effective breakthrough time. the findings revealed that the langmuir isotherm provided the best agreement with the numerical results, indicating that the dominant adsorption mechanism was monolayer adsorption with limited surface capacity. moreover, it was observed that the breakthrough occurred earlier at the midpoint and was delayed at the outlet, which is attributed to progressive adsorption and local saturation along the column. overall, the developed numerical framework offers an efficient approach for evaluating contaminant transport and adsorption in porous media, which can be effectively utilized for the design and optimization of sand-based filtration systems.
