treatment of oily wastewater: a review of physical, chemical, and novel technologies

Authors
Abstract    oil wastewater is considered one of the important environmental pollutants that are produced in the oil, petrochemical, refinery industries, and drilling operations. these wastewaters contain high amounts of oil, grease, aromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and resistant organic compounds which, if directly dischargedinto the environment, cause severe contamination of water and soil and threaten the health of living organisms.in recent decades, various methods for the treatment of these wastewaters have been investigated, which canbe classified into three main groups: physical, chemical, and biological. physical methods such as flotation, membrane filtration, and adsorption are mainly used for the initial separation of oils and suspended particles.chemical processes including coagulation–flocculation and the fenton process are used to decompose stableorganic compounds and improve the final quality of water. in recent years, new technologies such asnanostructured membranes and superhydrophobic materials have found wide application in the treatment ofoily wastewater. the combination of these methods in the form of hybrid systems (such as membrane–fentonor biological–physical) has been proposed as efficient and sustainable approaches. this article, through acomprehensive review of recent studies, examines the mechanisms, advantages, limitations, and future trendsin oily wastewater treatment.
