fabrication of a bio-based structural composite utilizing paper industry residues in conjunction with sorel cement

Authors
Abstract    in this study, the fabrication and evaluation of a lightweight, high-strength construction composite based on sorelcement (magnesium oxychloride cement, moc), latif paper mill residues, and polyacrylate resin were investigatedas a strategy to mitigate the environmental impacts of the cement and paper industries. the main objective was todevelop a bio-based material with optimized mechanical and physical properties and enhanced resistance to moisture, impact, and heat. for this purpose, samples were produced with varying ratios of sorel cement to cellulosic waste, with and without the incorporation of 20% polyacrylate. a series of tests including water absorption, volumetricswelling, moisture uptake, flexural strength, compressive strength, impact resistance, and fire resistance wereconducted. the results showed that increasing the sorel cement ratio reduced water absorption while improvingcompressive strength and elastic modulus. in contrast, the inclusion of paper mill waste particularly in the absence ofadditives led to a reduction in certain mechanical properties. the addition of polyacrylate exerted a positive andsignificant effect on both physical and mechanical performance, enhancing adhesion, hydrophobicity, dimensionalstability, and impact load tolerance. samples containing polyacrylate in the sc50–sl50 formulation exhibited thehighest absorbed impact energy and the best flexural performance. moreover, all samples demonstrated acceptablefire resistance, with weight loss primarily attributed to moisture evaporation. overall, the findings indicate that throughproper material proportioning and the use of polyacrylate as a performance enhancing additive, paper industry residuescan be effectively utilized in the production of sustainable, high performance construction materials. these resultsrepresent an important step toward the advancement of green construction technologies and the reduction ofenvironmental impacts associated with building materials.
