assessment of heavy metal (cu, pb, cd, hg, as) pollution and their potential sources in agricultural soils of mogan agro-industry (northeastern area of section 9)

Authors
Abstract    this study was conducted to investigate the concentrations and potential origins of heavy metals (cu, pb, cd,hg, as) in the agricultural soils of the mogan plain at the ardabil provenance. twenty surface soil samples(0-30 cm depth) were collected (19 cultivated and 1 uncultivated) and analyzed using icp-ms (inductivelycoupled plasma mass spectrometry). the physicochemical properties of the soil, including texture, ph, andorganic matter content, were also examined. results indicated that the soil texture was predominantly loamyto clay loam. the average ph of the samples was 7.9 (in the moderately alkaline range), and the mean organicmatter content was 1.62%. the average concentrations of cu, pb, cd, hg and as were 39.02, 636.42, 1.46,619, 18.49 mg/kg respectively. a comparison of these values with international standards set by the who(world health organization) and epa (environmental protection agency) indicated elevated levels ofcontamination, particularly for cd, pb, hg and as.in addition to geochemical and environmental indicators, multivariate statistical analyses, specifically correlation coefficient (r), principal component analysis (pca)and cluster analysis (ca), were employed to identify the source and distinguish the pathways of thecontaminants. the findings indicate the combined influence of both natural sources and anthropogenicactivities in shaping the heavy metal contamination pattern in the region mineralogical analysis performed byx-ray diffraction (xrd) on four selected samples showed that the major mineral phases were quartz, feldspar, albite, calcite, and mica. furthermore, the use of the chemical separation laboratory at tabriz universityindicated that kaolinite and illite were the primary and secondary clay minerals, respectively, suggesting thatall the necessary analyses were conducted in the university's laboratory. given the accumulation of thesemetals, the resulting soil contamination, and the threat to the environment, urgent management strategies andremediation approaches are necessary to control the sources of pollution and improve the quality of naturalresources furthermore, mineralogical analysis (using x-ray diffraction on four selected samples) revealed thepresence of quartz, feldspar, albite, calcite, and mica as the main minerals, and illite as a secondary claymineral. given the accumulation of these metals and the consequent threat to soil health and the environment, urgent management strategies and remediation approaches are essential for controlling pollution sources andimproving soil quality
