Abstract
the rapid pace of urbanization and its consequent environmental and financial challenges have underscored the urgent need for transitioning toward green smart cities. in this context, blockchain technology serves as a powerful tool for ensuring transparency, security, and decentralization, while financial geography provides a robust framework for the spatial analysis and targeted allocation of green investments, offering significant synergistic potential for sustainable urban development. the present study, employing a scientometric approach and knowledge mapping methodology, analyzed 384 scientific documents indexed in the sciencedirect database from 2015 to 2025 to identify the position and evolutionary trends of these two domains within the green smart city literature. results from co-occurrence analysis of keywords and knowledge network visualization using vosviewer revealed that blockchain occupies a central position in the knowledge network, exhibiting strong connections with concepts such as the internet of things, smart contracts, and security, while demonstrating a clear shift in recent years toward sustainability-oriented applications. in contrast, financial geography and related concepts—such as spatial green finance and tokenization of urban green assets—remain marginal within the network, lacking independent thematic clusters or strong linkages with the blockchain core. this research highlights a significant research gap in the systematic integration of financial geography and blockchain within green smart cities and recommends that future studies focus on developing integrated financial-spatial frameworks based on blockchain, particularly tailored to developing cities and arid/semi-arid regions such as iran, in order to enhance transparency, efficiency, and the targeted attraction of green investments at the urban scale.
