Abstract
the efficiency of structural components and mechanical elements plays a crucial role in developing sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructures in modern cities. tension compression springs are widely employed in urban transportation systems, vibration-control devices, compact mechanical tools, and various industrial facilities. optimizing these springs with the aim of reducing weight, increasing durability, and improving overall performance can significantly decrease the consumption of raw materials, reduce maintenance costs, and extend the operational lifetime of equipment—objectives that align closely with the principles of “green cities” and sustainable engineering. in this study, a comprehensive optimization framework based on nine metaheuristic algorithms is presented to solve two benchmark spring-design problems: (1) the classical tension/compression spring design (case 1) and (2) an advanced compression-spring design problem involving continuous, discrete, and integer variables (case 2). all nine metaheuristic algorithms were executed under identical experimental conditions, and their performance was evaluated in terms of solution quality, robustness, and computational efficiency. the results indicate that several modern metaheuristic techniques are capable of producing lighter, more economical, and mechanically feasible spring designs. overall, the findings demonstrate that applying advanced optimization methods can reduce material usage, enhance the efficiency of urban mechanical systems, and ultimately contribute to the development of greener and more sustainable infrastructures.
