reinterpreting the concept of product impermanence through sensory user interaction to reduce environmental impacts; (wabi-sabi inspired design approach)

Authors
Abstract    this study addresses the problem of the widespread misinterpretation of product impermanence, which is typically regarded as a design flaw within industrial design and has consequently led tostrategies such as planned obsolescence, premature replacement, and the reinforcement ofconsumerist behavior. such a cycle diminishes users’ emotional attachment to products, increaseswaste generation, and places additional pressure on natural resources. the aim of this study is toreinterpret decay as a meaningful dimension of user experience and to propose a framework foraffective product design.the research analyzes the philosophy of wabi-sabi particularly its aesthetic principles ofimperfection, impermanence, and the imprint of time and aligns them with the three-level structureof emotion-driven design. by integrating this philosophy with affective design principles, the studyproposes a conceptual framework in which material changes such as cracking, patina, and texturaltransformation, when guided by a cognitively informed design pattern, become elements thatenhance identity, meaning, and user attachment rather than diminishing product value.the incorporation of wabi-sabi at the visceral level can foster positive initial reactions to naturalmaterials and visual simplicity; at the behavioral level, user engagement with the perceptibleprocess of material aging can enrich the quality of interaction; and at the reflective level, theproduct’s natural aging becomes part of the user’s personal narrative and identity, strengtheningemotional durability and reducing the inclination toward replacement. overall, the findings suggestthat redefining decay within an emotion-centered design framework can influence product life cyclesand serve as an effective strategy for reducing environmental impacts in product design.
