modern treatment of urban wastewater using magnetic fields: a step toward a sustainable city

Authors
Abstract    with the rapid growth of urban populations and the expansion of industries, municipal wastewater containing heavy pollutants and toxic metals has become a serious threat to the environment and human health. although conventional treatment methods are effective, they face limitations such as high costs, excessive sludge production, and high energy consumption. in recent years, the use of magnetic nanoparticles as novel adsorbents has gained significant attention for improving water quality and reducing heavy metal concentrations. compounds such as mnfe?o?, fe?o?, and magnetic nanocomposites, with their high adsorption capacity, easy recovery through magnetic fields, and reusability, offer unique opportunities for sustainable wastewater treatment. recent studies indicate that magnetic nanoparticles can effectively remove pb²?, cd²?, zn²?, and fluoride ions from industrial and municipal wastewater, while the antibacterial activity of some magnetic compounds also reduces microbial loads. this paper reviews the latest research on magnetic nanoparticles, their adsorption and separation mechanisms for heavy metals, and their practical applications in urban wastewater treatment. the results demonstrate that integrating magnetic fields with nanoparticles not only enhances efficiency but also reduces operational and environmental costs, marking an effective step toward sustainable cities. the findings of this review can serve as a guideline for planning advanced wastewater treatment systems on an urban scale.
