Abstract
in times of rapid urban transformation, returning to nature and utilizing cultural heritage is a way to revive theidentity and sustainability of cities. nature-centered urban design with an indigenous approach is an effort forcoexistence of humans, nature, and culture; and biomimetics, as a science inspired by nature, can be a bridgebetween biological knowledge and indigenous traditions in urban design. this article examines the integrationof biomimetics and vernacular design in creating livable urban spaces. since vernacular design is rooted in thetraditional knowledge and lived experience of communities; knowledge that formed in interaction with natureand is reflected in traditional architecture, gardening, and climatic structures. the connection between natureand culture in urban design. indigenous culture and nature have always been in interaction. traditional iranianarchitecture is a prime example of this symbiosis. windbreaks inspired by wind flow and natural ventilation, aqueducts modeled after underground water courses, iranian gardens with their geometric leaf structure andbalance of light and shadow. these elements are not only aesthetic, but also functional, sustainable, andhumane. biomimetics can reinterpret this indigenous knowledge and apply it to contemporary urban design.therefore, nature-based urban design with an indigenous approach is a way to recreate cities that are both inharmony with the environment and with culture of people. biomimetics, inspired by nature, and indigenousdesign, rooted in tradition, can, hand in hand, create a livable, sustainable, and humane future for cities. thisapproach is not only scientific, but also poetic, cultural, and ethical.
