Abstract
the rapid increase in waste generation within educational and urban centers poses a majorchallenge to achieving sustainable development goals and realizing the concept of greenuniversities. this study aims to design a data-driven framework based on artificialintelligence (ai) to predict waste generation and optimize the recycling process in anacademic environment. simulated data from six university buildings (educational, service, administrative, residential, library, and sports) were generated according to the patternsreported by khoa et al. (2020) and abdallah et al. (2020). in the proposed framework, anartificial neural network (ann) model was employed to predict daily waste generation, while a genetic algorithm (ga) was applied to optimize the waste collection routes.the results showed that the ann model accurately predicted the amount of waste with amean error below 2% (r² = 0.98). the ga optimization reduced the total collection distanceby 24% and fuel consumption by 20%. the highest recycling efficiency was observed in theservice building (cafeteria) with 65%. these findings are consistent with gupta (2019) andsharma & vaid (2021), confirming that the integration of ai and internet of things (iot)technologies can enhance waste management efficiency by up to 95%.the proposed framework can serve as a practical model for developing smart wastemanagement systems in iranian green universities, contributing to operational cost reductionand improvement of environmental performance indicators.
