molecular dynamics simulation of the effect of agglomerating acids on copper separation performance in polyacrylonitrile-based polymeric membranes

Authors
Abstract    in this study, the effect of adding complexing acids on the behavior of copper ions at the surface ofpolyacrylonitrile (pan)-based polymeric membranes was investigated using molecular dynamics(md) simulation. all simulations were carried out in biovia materials studio 2023. thecompass iii force field was employed to accurately describe the interactions among allcomponents, including pan polymer chains, water molecules, cu²⁺ ions, and citric and tartaricacids. a one-sided slab configuration was constructed in which the pan membrane was placed indirect contact with the aqueous solution of ions and ligands, enabling proper evaluation of surfaceadsorption and concentration distribution. to elucidate the structural evolution of copper ions, radial distribution function (rdf) analyses were performed, indicating enhanced proximity of cu²⁺ions to the functional groups of pans after introducing complex-forming ligands. moreover, concentration profile analysis along the z-direction revealed a more pronounced accumulation ofcopper ions at the membrane interface, confirming their stronger adsorption tendency onto the pansurface. additionally, mean square displacement (msd) calculations and diffusion coefficientmeasurements demonstrated that the inclusion of the complexing agents led to a reduction in ionicmobility and increased adhesion near the membrane surface.overall, the results indicate that citric and tartaric acids significantly improve copper separationperformance in pan membranes by enhancing ion–polymer interactions and decreasing thediffusivity of cu²⁺ ions toward the permeate side.
