a review of groundwater and soil pollution caused by petroleum hydrocarbons in tabriz industries: sources, environmental consequences, and new cleanup technologies

Authors
Abstract    surface and subsurface water pollution caused by petroleum hydrocarbons is one of the most importantenvironmental challenges in industrial areas, especially in tabriz city. in this study, with a systematic reviewapproach, the sources, behavior and consequences of hydrocarbon pollution in the tabriz aquifer, as well asmodern cleanup technologies, were investigated. the findings show that leakage from fuel storage tanks, transmission line fractures, refinery processes and railway activities are the most important sources ofpetroleum compounds including lnapls, btex and pahs entering the aquifer. these pollutants, bypenetrating into unsaturated layers and then entering the groundwater surface, form migratory solution plumesthat cause the spread of pollution and threaten the quality of drinking water. a review of regional studiesshowed that the eastern and northeastern regions of tabriz have the highest vulnerability. also, the study ofcleanup methods showed that modern technologies such as enhanced bioremediation, biosurfactants, biochar, air sparging and soil vapor extraction are more effective than traditional methods. finally, this studyemphasizes that controlling hydrocarbon pollution in tabriz requires continuous monitoring, carefulmanagement of pollutant sources and the use of modern cleanup technologies to protect groundwater resources.
