application of municipal solid waste compost as organic fertilizer in agriculture: benefits and challenges

Authors
Abstract    sustainable agriculture requires effective alternatives to chemical fertilizers, whose excessive use in recent years has led to soil degradation and water pollution. municipal solid waste compost (mswc), enriched with organic matter and essential nutrients, has the potential to improve the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil and thereby enhance plant performance. this organic amendment not only provides a gradual release of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but also supplies micronutrients such as iron, zinc, and manganese, which play vital roles in plant physiological processes. moreover, the presence of beneficial microorganisms in compost increases soil biological activity and reduces plant diseases. despite these advantages, the application of mswc faces challenges such as the risk of heavy metal contamination, variable quality due to poor management, and economic constraints. this article reviews the properties and benefits of mswc, discusses the challenges associated with its use in agriculture, and emphasizes the need for standardization and quality monitoring.
