Abstract
the 'alavis of turkey constitute one of the most significant religious and cultural minorities in the country, whose history and identity are deeply intertwined with the name and legacy of imam ʿali (peace be upon him). in 'alavi belief and ritual practice, imam ʿali is regarded not only as a religious leader but also as the embodiment of truth, justice, and the ideal human being. however, within the context of intellectual and social transformations in contemporary turkey, diverse interpretations of the status and rank of imam ʿali have emerged, each reflecting internal religious, political, and cultural shifts within 'alavi community. the main concern of this study is to examine how imam ʿali is represented in various discourses of turkish 'alavis and to elucidate the role of these representations in the redefinition of 'alavi religious and cultural identity. within this framework, the article explores a typology of contemporary 'alavi interpretations of imam ʿali in the discourse of the present-day 'alawites in turkey and seeks to provide a systematic analysis of this interpretive diversity. 'alavi identity in this context is understood not as a static tradition, but as a dynamic and multilayered discourse in which different representations of imam ʿali serve as foundations for identity construction, religious legitimacy, and the organization of social action. the present study is based on an analysis of turkish-language sources, field observations conducted in istanbul, and a discourse analysis of 'alavi institutions, and it identifies five major interpretations: (1) the shiʿi interpretation, which understands imam ʿali as an infallible imam and a doctrinal authority within twelver shiʿism; (2) the conservative interpretation, which presents him as a guardian of tradition and turkish ethnic identity; (3) the ideological interpretation, emphasizing imam ʿali's commitment to justice and social activism; (4) the cultural interpretation, which seeks to reconstruct traditional ritual bonds within an urban context; and (5) an interpretation that conceptualizes 'alavi identity without centrality to imam ʿali, redefining 'alevism as a cultural and post-religious identity. from these readings emerge five distinct portrayals of imam ʿali: ʿali as imam, ʿali as a sacred figure, ʿali as turkified, ʿali as a symbolic figure, and the removal of imam ʿali from 'alavi identity altogether. the findings demonstrate that these representations not only reflect epistemic and social transformations among turkish 'alavis, but also play a significant role in the continuity or transformation of their religious and ethnic identity in the modern era.keywords: turkish 'alavis, imam ʿali, sacralization, cultural identity, symbolic ʿali
