Abstract
a significant part of the intellectual history of shia islam is dedicated to the confrontation and debates between the scholars of the akhbari and usuli schools. the effects of this confrontation have typically extended beyond theoretical circles and have manifested in various forms within shia communities throughout different historical periods. of course, there have also been brief periods where these two schools coexisted and engaged in constructive interactions due to temporal, environmental, and political exigencies. on the threshold of the thirteenth century of the hijra and with the emergence of the qajar dynasty, the usulis and akhbarisand renewed their past rivalries. with the emergence and establishment of the qajar government led by agha mohammad shah, a new chapter in the rivalry and conflict between the akhbaris and usulis began. the leadership of this intellectual dispute initially took shape between kashif al ghita, the leader of the usulis, and mirza muhammad, one of the intellectual leaders of the akhbaris. the question addressed in the present thesis is why the disagreements and confrontations between the scholars of the akhbari and usuli schools in the era of fath ali shah shifted from theological ideas to political rivalries and changes in the court. this thesis aims to revisit the historical confrontations between the theological scholars of the usuli and akhbari schools, with a more reflective examination of the intellectual confrontation between mirza muhammad nishaburi, an akhbari, and the usuli scholars, and to present the results of this confrontation. the fundamental finding of the research is that the intellectual dominance of the usulis over the akhbaris, which exemplified the victory of reason over mere tradition, facilitated a connection between scholars and the government, or in other words, politics. with the emergence of institutions such as the religious authority (marja' taqlid), part of the political and religious powers that the akhbaris considered exclusive to the infallible imams was transferred to the marja' taqlid, and the connection between religion and politics, as one of the fundamental principles of shia islam, gained particular significance.
