Abstract
the long common border between iran and afghanistan, especially in the eastern regions, has always been the focus of border and security studies due to ethnic, religious similarities, and its specific strategic position. the prolonged presence of foreign forces in afghanistan, especially after september 11, 2001, has brought about significant developments in this area and has created new security challenges for iran. this article seeks to address the question of how the military presence of the united states and the establishment of a government inclined towards this country in afghanistan affected the balance of power in the region and particularly the strategic position of iran, as well as the direct and indirect security threats posed to the islamic republic of iran by the long term military presence of the united states in afghanistan. the fundamental hypothesis is based on the premise that the presence of northern alliance forces led by the united states in afghanistan over the past two decades has been accompanied by multiple security challenges for the islamic republic of iran. the expansion of the activities of insurgent groups and smuggling is among the factors that have added to the complexity of security issues in this region. this research, organized with an analytical approach, collecting documents and materials through library methods and using credible internet sites, has reached the fundamental conclusion that the presence of the u.s. in afghanistan during the period from 2001 to 2021 has significantly impacted the state of its borders with iran. the result of the presence of foreign forces in afghanistan and changes in the governmental structure of this country has posed challenges to the islamic republic of iran, including terrorist threats, drug trafficking, armed group influence, and ethnic and religious conflicts.
