the economy and society of mehrabad village in zanjan in the pre-constitutional era; a study based on documents from the mehraneh museum

Authors rostami hasan
Abstract    in the province of khamseh (zanjan), the influence of prominent classes and groups placed the peasantry under partial subjugation, a situation most evident in royal (khaleseh) lands. the village of mehrabad, located in the ghani-beyglu district and adjacent to the lands of the shahsavan tribes, belonged to the scholarly mousavi family. by the late naseri period, it faced multiple challenges in rural affairs. despite mehrabad's economic importance and high status during the qajar era, the living conditions and social circumstances of its inhabitants—as well as those of other areas in zanjan—have not been comprehensively studied. this research seeks to answer the question of what the economic and social situation of mehrabad was in the years preceding the constitutional revolution, and what obstacles and problems it faced. the central hypothesis suggests that the villagers had no significant conflict with the mousavi family, as the landowners. however, despite the presence of dry-farming lands suitable for grain production, they suffered from issues such as a damaged mill, poor and unsafe transportation routes, and attacks by the shahsevan tribes. the methods of water distribution and the joqeh (strip-field) system also influenced tensions and social relations within mehrabad. nevertheless, the village was not in a critical state regarding famine or epidemic outbreaks, and its survival was not gravely endangered. this study employs a case study method, based on documents from the mousavi (mirzaee) family preserved in the mehraneh museum of zanjan, along with other primary sources, using a descriptive–explanatory approach to examine the subject.
